Reflections on some canvases with Latin inscriptions from San Pedro Church in Lima

In the decoration of the Jesuit church of San Pedro in Lima, the presence of canvases with Latin inscriptions is interesting. This study is dedicated to the analysis of three specimens located in the pilasters of the central nave. These are works attributed, for iconographic and stylistic reasons, to a Quito workshop from the late 17th century. The study of the works and their inscriptions give us the opportunity to make some reflections on iconographic originality with respect to possible reference models and on the function of Latin in the transmission of the Christian message by the Jesuit Order.
